"Have a great day!" I have heard those simple four words many times in this first week of classes. They have come from students, faculty, and staff. And they have been genuine. They signify a community ready for a semester of learning, relationship-building, challenge and growth.
While I am sure that this is not a stress-free week on all fronts, I have to observe that my interactions on campus reveal a certain excitement, pride of place, and good humor - a sense that we are all on the same team, a good team - one that we are proud to be a part of.
And who can resist a parking story in this first week. Yesterday as I was parking in what I affectionately call the "back forty," a student stopped as he was getting into his car beside mine and smiled, saying "I never thought I'd be parking beside the president." "This is my reserved spot," I responded, "don't get caught in it."
I hope that everyone is settling into the new semester with as much positive energy as I have felt. While every semester we characterize our students, I repeatedly hear this semester about an "engaged" and "positive" group of students. Our new campus at One Academy Place has the same feel. If you have not had a chance to visit the new site I encourage you to make the trip. It is beautiful and bustling.
I look forward to All College Day to share and celebrate the new semester/year.
